The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
