Finest Small Screen Choices: Seven Must-Watch Films In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the tyranny of women's appearance along with the perceived horrors of advancing years. The veteran actress presents an inspired portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, she seeks out a mysterious and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a younger clone called Sue, resulting in a steadily more toxic connection between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This suspenseful story stars Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from writing about global conflict to join a luxury cruise accompanied by an ailing wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich guests. However when a mysterious woman disappears from the ship one night and all passengers denies she ever existed, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

Presence

Steven Soderbergh pushes his film-making abilities in this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. As a family including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the lens – as the unseen entity – follows them around. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and it looks like defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? It's a fun idea that avoids overstaying, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, the Sky channel

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

The iconic actor fully commits to his eccentric image through this meta comedy caper. He acts as a narcissistic Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” is put to the test. October 11th, evening, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a follow-up. Set in the late 70s in Denver, several kidnappings has rendered the youth on edge. Once Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a dungeon, he fears the worst. But the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with ghostly voices offering help, and the intuitive nightmares from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the battle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for greed in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic regarding the shamed televangelist and her criminal husband. The actor plays the greedy Jim, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain manages to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, 1.15am, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

The current week's another release by the same director delivers a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars worn by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is with uncovering a mole within their ranks from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of calm composure, so a delicious psychological game of truth or lie unfolds. Additional actors join in the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
