An underground market for unapproved slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, based on new investigations.

Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with numerous of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

This medication is an experimental injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Some influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Removal
According to the social media company, the service has taken down problematic material and prohibited related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing compliance measures.

Research also discovered groups with up to nine thousand members selling the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with numerous of users, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for preparing or administering at residence.
After minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions take place. The seller provided an instruction manual and promised delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, health issues or previous experience.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to possibly serious medical dangers”.
